Tuesday, May 21 – Dead Horse Ranch State Park, Cottonwood, AZ. Dead Horse Ranch State Park is located in Cottonwood, AZ. on 423 acres. The area has mild temperatures, so it is ideal for camping, biking, horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking along the Verde River, boating and fishing. This is a popular camping area for the “snowbirds” during the winter. The park has five loops for camping and three of them have electric and water. Bathhouses were clean and there were showers. The Quail loop has more vegetation and the higher you go there is less shade but the views of Cottonwood, Jerome and the Coconino National Forest from the top loops are stunning. The cost is $25 and reservations should be made for the winter season. There were only about twenty five campers the one night stopover we were there. There are a number of hiking trails throughout the park. Ranch history - The Ireys family came from Minnesota looking to buy a ranch in 1940’s. At this ranch they discovered a large dead horse lying by the road. After searching for a number of weeks the father asked his kids what ranch did they want to buy and they said “the one with the dead horse”. In 1973 the AZ State Parks system acquired the ranch with the condition that the name did not change. The park is a close drive to Jerome, Prescott Valley, Cottonwood and Sedona. We camped here in a Motorhome.

Stayed here many times. Clean, well run, great volunteers. Good size sites, some a little less than level. Nightly rate may be off just a bit. Great views from the higher elevation sites. Good lake fishing and river--regular trout stocking. We camped here in a Motorhome.

Sites: Nicely spaced. Red Hawk loop seems a little larger spaces. Site #56 is a pull through by itself. HOOK UPS: Water & Electric only. Dump station at entrance Bathrooms: OK. Showers seemed aging. Laundry: None Pets: Pet friendly. Lots of places to walk the dogs. Nice city dog park 2 miles from campground. Wifi: None Verizon internet: Worked well Sprint internet: OK Verizon phone: Very Good AT&T phone: Very good Book exchange: No Activities: Lots of hiking from sites, geocaches, small mountain bike park. Ranger programs on weekends. Mail delivery: no. Area/Town/Sights: Cottonwood is becoming well known as the cheaper, more down to earth Sedona. Plenty of restaurants to choose from. Some Indian ruins. Lots of wine tasting shops. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.

I stayed a month plus 2 more weeks because I liked it. It's not for everyone, a bit older and a bit quirky. It's very pet friendly. Not big-rig-friendly. There are 3 sections with different rates - the front, the hill and the back. The spots in the back and on the hill are mostly long-term. Spots in back are along a road cut out of the hill next to the river. It's a tough turn-around and all are back in spots, but angled so that your door pretty much faces the river. That's where I stayed and it was great. My RV is 35' and it really no problem getting parked. Once parked it felt like a lot of space. I especially enjoyed the Verde River which flows along the side of the park and was about 30 feet from my door. The front section is more of a "standard" setup and the lowest rate. The hill is the highest rate and offers quite a lot of privacy. The bathroom/shower is passable - not exceptionally clean, but not gross. Wi-Fi is only available to the front spots. I use Verizon Wi-Fi and it worked very well in the back. Staff was very friendly and helpful. I used a laundromat in town (3-minute drive) that was 800 times nicer than the one on site. Some of the permanent residents are on the colorful side, but friendly enough. And there are tent sites in a park right along the river. Nicest tent sites in an RV park I've seen. My only complaint is the highway noise. It's quieter the farther in the back you go, the front is worse and the hill is quite loud. Convenient location. We camped here in a Motorhome.

Interesting old park on a creek (Verde River) and there is an ancient Indian mound on the property that can be hiked to. Centrally located with access to Sedona, Jerome, monuments and parks within the area. There are many permanent residents (scary looking and/or noisy) with NO restrictions to age/condition of unit/amount of junk allowed to be piled up around the RVs, though they do claim to have a unit age restriction. NOT big rig friendly and turning around is difficult. Very uneven sites that are not well maintained. If you're game, it's OK for a night or two but I found the place rather depressing due to the lack of standards. We camped here in a Motorhome.

The management does not know about RVs and has staff say they have spaces for big rigs. However, we saw MANY large rigs leave after stopping, and one even told us they were told this park was built for big rigs, but it is not. Motorhomes over 40' and fifth wheels over 34' will have a very difficult time finding a spot wide and long enough to allow ease of parking and length required. In order to park our 38' fifth wheel and dually truck, we had to use two spaces. Everyone that works there is friendly and spoke of how run down this park has become since new management took over. It is fine for rigs of moderate size, if you don't desire conveniences. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.

Surprisingly loved this park. It is an older park, with a quirky layout, which is mostly long-term residents. The shade trees were great and our site was level and had both great cable and good Wi-Fi. There was a little bit of traffic noise, but at night we didn't notice it very much at all. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The other residents were also very friendly and very quiet. My Verizon card and Sprint cell phone both worked well here. The location is about 20 minutes from Sedona, 20 from Jerome and 20 from the casino plus close to the grocery stores. Not a lot of frills at this park, no pool or hot tub and the dog walk wasn't really much of a dog walk but the Wi-Fi here works much better than the 'fancy' park over by the casino, so we were happy and would return. We camped here in a Motorhome.

Great park. Close to everything and big rig friendly. Easy in and out. We were greeted by really nice staff who went out of their way to make our stay nice. This is a place to stay for awhile. Lots of big trees and shade. They even have a lounge with lots of books. I would have given a 10, but no pool. I will be back and stay there again. Rate is based on a 1 week stay. We camped here in a Motorhome.

We enjoyed a month's stay in this nice, old park. The site was large and level, rocked and shady. In spite of being on a major street, it's nice and quiet, and walking distance to a number of restaurants. Walmart and grocery stores are nearby. Everything worked well and was clean. The managers were very friendly and helpful. Yes, it is an older park, with some permanent residents in old units, but they are friendly and quiet. Could not ask for more. (The price I've listed is based on a rate of $400 a month.) We camped here in a Travel Trailer.

We are relatively new to TT so can't compare this park to a lot of other TT parks, however, we really enjoy this one and the surrounding area. Plenty of sites broken down into 3 or 4 different areas. Mostly 30 amp sites which was adequate for a stay in early May. TT is now open to the public so we're still trying to figure out what the advantage is to TT-to buy into this membership (ours was a gift). We enjoy Cottonwood, a nice 'small town', with Sedona, Jerome, Flagstaff and other areas nearby. We will definitely camp here again. I might add that data service here is hit and miss...mostly miss! Our Verizon service phone worked well, but the Verizon air card was not as good. We camped here in a Motorhome.

Rate reflect TT membership. Park is open to public and offers RPI discount. Mostly 30amp electrical, but many sites are being upgraded to 50amp ($3/night extra). Big Rig friendly with two pools and spas. Verizon 3g/4bars ATT Edge/2bars, but only with Wilson amp. Close to Sedona, Jerome, Prescott, Montezuma's Cliff dwelling and the Cliff Castle Casino. Friendly staff, but pools will be closed if lightning is showing in the area. Also, they have adult hours twice a day and the rangers will enforce it. We stay here when passing through Arizona. Nice facility. We camped here in a Motorhome.

This has been a long cold winter in the Verde Valley. This CG is sheltered a bit from the more severe storms which blow through from the SW, but the cold has been unusual since October 2012. The CG staff is helpful and friendly and the amenities are clean and well maintained. When we needed a picnic table replaced (a previous camper badly abused it) the maintenance staff brought one out in a very short time. Outside faucets drip all the time, keeps them from freezing, and the utilities work great. There are lots of fun things to do in the CG and services in nearby Cottonwood . We have remained in the Verde Valley for most of this winter, using Krazy K in Camp Verde for our "week out" and returning here. We enjoy the activities here and the people who either reside here or are just passing through. When we do leave this spring to continue our National Parks tour, we will time our travels to return here for the winter. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
