This is a brand new park and we were the first campers. It is small and cozy in a quiet part of town. The owners were wonderful and a lot of fun. Walden is just a gorgeous place to stay. The wildlife and views are amazing. We stayed two nights in a site with plenty of room. If arriving on Hwy 14, turn right at first stop sign. Granite corners is on the left. The address is 580 G Street. If arriving on Hwy 125, which joins 14 on the East side of town, turn right at the Conoco which is CR 12. Continue to the Stop sign. Granite Corners is one block down on the left. We camped here in a Motorhome.
Calling this a resort is a joke! It is terraced on a hillside of rocks and dirt/clay. The sites are weed ridden, the clay sticks to your shoes in 1/2" thick clumps. The views are beautiful but that is the only attribute this campground has. First, showers are not included in the $30/ nightly rate. Oh no, that will be $5 extra! If the proprietor is using this money for upkeep and maintenance, he owes me $4.50!! The bathrooms are small, single units and smelly. The shower stalls are musty and filthy. The kicker, you better not need to use the restroom before 8am. That is when the "store" opens and that is when you can get a key. No Joke! Oh and he closes (locks up) at 9pm. Late night potty break? I don't think so!! I implore you, stay away from this campground!!!! Better to boon dock it along the lake shore if you are so equipped. That is free or maybe $5/ night. We camped here in a Tent Trailer.
When we pulled up, we saw a banner that said the campground had won the Chairman's award in 2010. Apparently, that doesn't take much because this place sucked! First, there is no propane, despite what their website says. Second, they've chopped all of their trees down because of a beetle invasion but left all of the stumps. This made the campground look like crap and difficult to walk around in. The dirt site was extremely unlevel. They say they have wi-fi, but it never worked while we were there. When we checked in, the guy told my friend, "you guys have to be in by 9:00 for quiet hours." Not sure what that meant, we made sure we were in the park by 9:00 thinking they may gate it or something. They just meant be inside your RV. (yes, we might be silly, but he could have been more clear). No grills are made available. Really no amenities at all except a meager playground. The only thing this place has going for it is full hook ups. I don't think these folks give a darn what people think who camp there. We camped here in a Motorhome.
They claim to have Wi-Fi but it doesn't reach all the campsites so we didn't have it and we were closest to the office. Owners were never around during the hours stated on the office door. Restrooms and showers were dirty. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
On the plus side, it's a decent place with full hookups. On the downside, there is absolutely nothing special about it. Ok for an overnighter and to dump after camping, but that's about it. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
This KOA campground was a real disappointment and not worth the price. However, there virtually no local competition, as only one portion of the nearby state park has utilities and that consists of electricity. The dirt roads were dusty/poorly maintained, the sites weren't being cleaned regularly, and the playground surface was part dirt and part wood chips. Yes, they had Wi-Fi, but it seldom worked even though there were few trees to block the signal. The laundry was clean with reasonable prices and the restrooms were warm and clean. The small store was well stocked, but the prices were high. This part of Colorado is a great place to see moose and other wildlife. The nearby Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge is worth visiting, as are the State Forest State Park visitor center in Gould and the museum in Walden. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
Agree with above poor ratings. This campground was very expensive for what it offered! It was so overgrown that you could not even get to the site picnic table or the hook-ups without walking in weeds. Even had to walk in weeds to get to the trash dumpster. Would not plan on stopping at this campground again! We camped here in a Motorhome.
This campground is practically in Colorado State Forest State Park. It is two miles from the North Michigan Reservoir which is a great place to fish and about six miles from the Moose Visitor Center. This is a great Rocky Mtn destination that will get you away from the crowds in the nearby NP. Reviews regarding the trees are accurate. It was sad to see so many of the trees had to be taken out due to pine beetles. It's still a beautiful area and the scenery, wildlife, fishing, and hiking options are great. Host and the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Staff at the Moose visitor center were great too. I hope to camp here again someday. We camped here in a Motorhome.
Pretty pricey for a mudhole with beetle killed trees all cut down. Nothing but scrub and mudholes in the roads. Maintenance was really not that evident. Staff and hangers-on in the office were right straight from "DELIVERANCE" the movie AND acted like it. We camped here in a Motorhome.
As previous reviewers have mentioned, the trees are gone. The pine and spruce beetles have devastated the forest in this part of Colorado and the owners had no choice but to have the dead trees cut down. Unfortunately, the campground is a mess, tall grass and weeds, muddy, dirt roads and overgrown and undefined sites. KOAs are not all good or all bad; they are separate entities. We've stayed at some really great ones and some really poor ones. This was one of the poor ones and we won't be back. We camped here in a Motorhome.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for this website. We were getting ready to do a week somewhere in the mountains with the family. Trees were important ! So we looked at the campgrounds website - nothing about cutting down all the trees. Thank you for providing a forum whereby we can check these things out. Poor old KOA is just about a thing of the past. If there is an overpriced campground it is sure to be a KOA. They have simply ceased to be a possibility for us anymore, too bad! We camped here in a Tent Trailer.
What a disappointment! The trees have all been cut down because of pine beetle, although the ads and website don't mention this. There is NO shade, although a local info paper had a picture of this KOA with many tall pines. Besides being "barren", they haven't cleaned it up with ruts and drag marks throughout where logs were dragged around. Weeds were tall and the interior roads and sites were rutted. It rained heavily the night we were there and we had mudholes full of water. There are no facilities other than a nice store and clean bathrooms. It was way overpriced for what we got, and we won't stay there again. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
This campground is located in a part of Colorado that is not heavily traveled, and is the only one around that has full hookups. Nonetheless, it is well maintained and the owners were friendly and helpful. Most of the pull-thru sites will be tight for longer RV's, but there is a section of back-in sites that are more out in the open and allow more maneuverability. The major outside activity for this campground is fishing, and the lakes/reservoirs in the area are part of the Colorado State Park system and are regularly stocked. We stayed here in a 33' 5th Wheel and enjoyed the peace and quiet. We will definitely go back. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
The setting is nice but the sites need improvement. The hookups are too far forward so I couldn't back in my trailer as far as I'd like because my connections would not reach. The playground is old and need of repair. However, they do have numerous things for kids to play on. If you look at this KOA campground on the internet, it will show ATV trails nearby. We woke to kids doing laps around the campground on 4 wheelers at 8 AM and they continued for 2 hours. I asked the front office if that was acceptable and the girl stated "as long as they don't act like idiots". Nevermind they were breaking the 5 MPH speed limit. I found this to be unacceptable and will seriously consider other campgrounds before going back to this KOA. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
As others have mentioned this area has been hit hard by the pine bark beetle. The campground has been clear cut which actually makes for beautiful views of the mountains, as well as super easy to maneuver in and around the campground. The sites are long level back-ins with 50amp and good space between sites. It is right off 14, but there is not a lot of traffic, especially at night. We used this campground as a base for doing several beautiful hikes in the area. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
We had purposely made reservations at this state park because of the lakes. They say on their website that the lakes are stocked; no they are not. We kept asking the rangers when they would be stocked, and they just kept saying they weren't sure when they were coming. They also say on their website that they have a dump station. Not true, theirs has a leak so it can't be used. Also the campground had been devastated by the pine beetles. The downed trees were lying everywhere; it was such a mess. Stay away from this state park. We attempted to get our money back from the state; filled out all the paperwork but never heard back. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
This is a campground just over the Continental Divide, in a fairly remote part of the state. Most of the trees have been removed due to the pine beetle infestation, making the first impression of the campground a bit stark. However, this clearing gives a good chance to observe moose browsing in a bog down the hill behind the campground. There are quite a few recreational opportunities in the surrounding state park, including hiking, 4-wheeling, and geocaching. So this is a park in a area, to get away from the crowds. The campsites are level, and ours had 30 and 50 amp service. There are no showers, and only vault toilets. Potable water is available. The dump station is several miles away and does not have water available to clean-up or to flush tanks. There are hidden costs. There is a $10 fee to reserve over the internet. In addition a $7 fee for daily park use (or $70 for an annual pass) is required. There are special discounts available for Colorado residents, which would reduce the camping fees. We camped here in a Motorhome.
They have had to remove the majority of trees due to pine beetles. This also improves the view of the marshes, and we saw 3 moose while here. The roads were in bad shape, but the sites were level. There was no host and the bathrooms were not as clean as they could be. Close to many hiking trails and the Moose Visitor Center. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
This beautiful campground is closing on 9-9-09 so they can remove almost all of the trees since they have been killed by pine beetles! It will be ruined and will be an open bare spot in the forest without shade. The host, does a terrific job keeping the campground spotless. BE WARNED. The dump is closed because of an underground leak so go with empty tanks!! This breaks your heart to see a wonderful campground be ruined! We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
A great State Park Campground. The sites are large and easy to get into. The electric sites have been upgraded to include 30 and 50 amp service! There is a ton to do here, including hiking, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, and much more. The forests have been attacked by the Bark Beetles and look bad, but come and enjoy anyway. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
Now this is camping! Sites are among the pine trees, night sky is amazing. This campground was very quiet and extemely well maintained! We were hardly out of our site when the camp host was here raking and cleaning! Hosts were very helpful. Wish we could have stayed longer and seen more sights. The only complaint is the vault toilets and no running water. If it had showers and flush toilets we may not have left! I would highly recommend this campground. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
Shaded spots, some were drifted with snow still. Not perfectly level, but what is one to expect in a state park? You're camping after all. Walking trail to fishing lakes. Picnic table and fire ring in each spot. Electric at most spots. Nice place to stay. Our space was reserved, but the marker was under another marker, a bit confusing. Friendly rangers. We camped here in a Motorhome.
Nothing like their website stated!!! I know it is not their fault that the trees were infested with beetles but they could have noted on their site that all the trees were cut down and not even picked up. The water spigot for you to fill your tank was in a place that you couldn't even get you camper to!!! The whole thing is under construction/renovation which is good. It needs it but it should have been shown or stated on website and then let me make the choice. There were men cutting down trees until about 4pm so they didn't want you exploring until they were finished. My son went to go fishing and they told him to come back. When he came back one of the loggers came up to him while he was fishing and said, "You're not going to catch anything because they haven't stocked it yet. There's no fish in there." Website said fishing!!! It was a 50 mile, difficult drive and extremely disappointing. Not worth the drive. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
Awesome views from our outer site. Horse corral available. Close to fishing lakes. Lots of people bring ATVs here, so that can get noisy. Vault toilets--you know what that means. Great recreation area. We camped here in a Motorhome.
