This campsite is mainly for small campers and/or tents. Campsites are smaller than they appear online. While our 32' camper fit in the site it was a tight fit. There is water and sewer dump station available, but not at your sites. Water is located throughout the campground, you just have to fill up before you get to your site. The sites are pretty level, and are crushed rock. Sites have fire pits/grill and a picnic table. The bath houses are clean and easily accessible. We had a generator, but not an inverter type and only used it when we charged the batteries. Would camp here again during the winter or fall, but would only in a tent. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
We planned to stay just overnight but due to some repair on our tow truck we spent five nights. This campground is very run down, no improvements have been made since a long time. Considering what you pay it's a fair deal though. The sites are very shady, sand and dirt. They are not very level but have very good access to hookups. No TV, no WiFi. Most campers are permanents. We didn't use the bathrooms but a glimpse at the laundry facility was enough to know you better avoid the facilities. Despite the Highway to Carolina Beach it was quiet at night (except for the acorns falling on our roof). If you don't mind the shabby neighborhood it's an ok and cheap place to stay for one or two nights what we would do if in the area. Don't miss the battleship - it's spectacular! We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.
Great campground! We got to stay here for 2 nights. This campground is a really nice campground for peace and quiet. We enjoyed it so much! The scenery was beautiful. The park has great amenities and staff. We enjoyed the stay. It's something different compared to nascar racing. We are heading to Bristol for the nascar race. This is our first trip ever. We are in our new motorhome and new to camping so we are enjoying every minute of it. Great Park! We camped here in a Motorhome.
This was the worst campground I've ever stayed in. My ten year old son and I pulled in and felt as though we should have just kept driving. We decided to stay knowing we'd only for here for 2 nights and be gone site seeing for the entire day time. The staff were not pleasant. The campers did not respect the campground and there was garbage strewn throughout. In the bathrooms, which smelled of urine and human waste, there was an old truck bench seat, along with signs that read: "If you are approached by a beggar, please notify the office immediately. Begging usually leads to theft." And another sign that read, "$100 reward for the campground vandal." We will not stay here again and do not recommend that others stay. We camped here in a Tent.
This park has nothing but a dump station and hot showers. The showers are pretty good with lots of warm to hot water. The roads are paved, the sites are gravel, and are pretty level depending on where you park. We had the place pretty much to ourselves in November. However like all NC parks, no alcohol is allowed and in November they lock the gates from 6pm till 8am. So if you're camping here, you must be back by six and if you're planning to stay, you have to get here before six. These hours change during the summer, spring, and fall. Check the (web) site for details. Verizon MiFI works fine here. Our rate reflects the senior rate. We camped here in a Motorhome.
Very nice campground with campsites in a wooded area which would be much appreciated during the hot summer. Acceptable shower facilities. Great proximity to Carolina Beach/Kure Beach attractions and not very far south of Wilmington. We especially liked the Fort Fisher SRA and NC Aquarium. We camped here in a Tent.
Carolina Beach State Part is definitely organized for tents, pop-ups, and smaller RVs. Most sites are back-in with a few pull through. The bath houses were clean and accessible from most sites. The sites on the second loop provide more space and have more foliage between them for privacy. There were some noisy groups while we stayed there, but the rangers were prompt in confronting the offenders. Hiking trails around the park are clearly marked and well maintained. For 2009, the marina is closed for repair. My only complaint is that much of the forest areas underwent a controlled burn in the fall and this was not announced on the website. Otherwise, it was a wonderful campground to stay in. We camped here in a Tent Trailer.
This campground is better suited to tent campers than self-contained campers. The majority of sites are back-in with a minority of pull-through, and those were generally very small. Many of the sites are not level enough for a motorhome. Our motorhome is 30 feet and we got one of the few pull-through sites large enough for us (but did have to enter it backwards for the door to face the correct direction. I do not recommend anything larger than a 30 foot home at this park. This time of year there are very few people present, although on a Saturday with excellent weather the place was suddenly full for one night. The bathrooms were not ship-shape and the showers lacked any privacy whatsoever. The gate is locked from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am and can only be opened in emergencies by contacting a ranger. In spite of the limitations, this is a good campground from which to explore the Wilmington area, and for those over 62 (regardless of residency), the nightly price is only $10. Otherwise it's $15. The NC state parks are going to a reservation system starting in July. We will stay here again when we visit this area. We camped here in a Motorhome.
All sites laid out in forest. Well dispersed, offering good privacy and shade. Beaches and Wilmington 15-30 minutes drive. Excellent well-run site, if you do not demand hook-ups We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
No hook-ups, many sites not very level but were decently sized; best suited for tent campers and small RV's (we have a 30 ft class A). This campground was in some disarray while we were there, probably in preparation for the summer season. Messy, unkept sites, large piles of dirt and gravel all over the place, only a handful of sites open for use. No reservations, gates hard locked at 7 pm this time of year. The bathrooms were serviceable but the showers were completely open, no privacy whatever. One dump station was open, both were easy to access. The Sugarloaf Dune trail and the Fly Trap trail were nice walks. Not a great campground but not bad and overall it worked well as a basecamp for visiting Wilmington. The Battleship North Carolina was fantastic, Fort Fisher interesting and the Fort Fisher/Southport ferry was fun. The old Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson area was also an interesting stop. We camped here in a Motorhome.
This campground is not much more than a parking lot. It is very conveniently located. The beach and all shopping is easily walkable. However, the campground itself is a grass sites. Bumper to bumper. No trees. You can get Wi-Fi but you pay either by the day or by the week and you pay for each computer that you need access for. If you don't want to spend much time sitting outside your camper, it's fine. It's VERY convenient to the beach and boardwalk. We camped here in a Motorhome.
As my husband says, this was just a place to park. We would not have stayed here except our son lives nearby. Tiny sites (communal dining, anyone?) that resulted in our slideout nearly touching another RV's, and sewage smell everywhere. Would not stay here again! Not sure what we paid; $30 is an estimate -- but whatever, it was too much for this place! We camped here in a Motorhome.
This park is basically a place to park your RV and hook-up to electric/water/sewer. Nothing else is provided in the way of bathrooms, playground, etc. It is in walking distance to the beach, food, and shopping. I stayed here during the week of Thanksgiving. It is a basic park without any amenities. (This was fine for my visit during the winter time). We camped here in a Travel Trailer.
This is a trailer park. Only two sites out of 25 were available for "campers". Much too expensive for the service provided. Do not use this park. We camped here in a Motorhome.
Campground did not have restrooms or showers. Campground allowed children, but wasn't a family type campground. It was too crowded for kids to ride bikes, play, etc... If used by individuals with no kids or as an overnight it would be ok, but would not recommend extended stay if you have children. We camped here in a Motorhome.
