We stayed 10 days at this campground. We used it as a base for touring all the attractions in the area of which there are many. We had a nice site, but there was some dust from the road at the side of the campground that leads to a modest subdivision. The rate reflects a few days at the "Sturgis Rates". We checked other campgrounds in the area and were glad we had picked this one. We camped here in a Motorhome.

We picked Beaver Lake to stay at for 5 days because of the reviews and that it advertised WiFi and cable TV. Most of the campgrounds in the Custer area don't have cable. The advertised WiFi is a joke. It's sporadic all over the park. Signal strength varies from good to non-existent within a 5 minute period and our site ("A") only had a signal once. They have an "internet room" near the office that has DSL broadband, but power was out on all the wall plugs. I reported it the first day, but it was never fixed. Consequently, I had to run on the laptop battery and recharge at the site. There's a cell phone signal at only one place (that I could find), near the office, next to a sign saying "Cell Phone Hotspot." The showers and bathrooms were clean but the shower stalls are so small, getting dressed and undressed is very difficult, even for my wife who's 5'1", 105 lbs. The people were friendly, if a bit stand-offish after I complained about the lack of power in the internet room. Parts of the site are very dusty (the ones with no shade) and I agree with the comment that the location is pretty far from a lot of the better attractions. Even with the Good Sam discount, this site was expensive and I would not recommend it for more than an overnight stay. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.

Stayed here 4 nights while touring the Blackhills area. Shady sites. Overall site may not be level, but the RV gravel pads seemed fairly level side to side. Very friendly staff. Good laundry facilities with a change machine so you can use any time. Our particular site was on the end and had access to the Southwest sky, so our portable satellite worked well. However, many sites may be blocked by trees. Good location just outside of Custer which had one good local owned and one larger chain grocery store. While not the nicest, it was very adequate and a good value. We would stay here again. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.

This is a very nice campground. Owners were friendly and helpful. Sites were shady and well off the road so it was nice and quiet. Campground is located close to many of the major attractions so I would recommend it as a home base. Really enjoyed our stay here. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.

The owners are very friendly and helpful. We were escorted to our site which was right by the clean bathrooms. Since we were camping in a conversion van that was very helpful. We heard no road noise in our site. I would definitely stay there again. We camped here in a Truck Camper.

Don't be put off by the fact that this campground is a combination RV park and horse campground. This camp is used as a base by people who bring their horses here to ride in the Black Hills, and the horse facilities, located on the perimeter of the park, are immaculate. Rate reflects weekly rate plus tax. We came for a few days and ended up spending a week because this is such a nice, clean, quiet park and there is so much to do in the area. This park is a gem as the RV sites are all level, gravel pull throughs, and you have beautiful views of the mountains through your windshield. Power and water pressure are excellent and the owners (who live on site) plan to continue to upgrade the park. We camped here in a Motorhome.

This is a great park. Clean and friendly and a great place to get away from it all. It's a horse park so there are flies but expected when you are at a horse park. Nothing we couldn't deal with. Close to Mt. Rushmore & Crazy Horse. The laundry was a little expensive. We will drive into Custer next time. There is no cable but they have a library of free movies. We camped here in a Motorhome.

I loved this campground. It is a unique combination of horses, horse trailers, and motorhomes. It is away from the main roads, and is very quiet at night. Deer and wild turkeys sometimes wonder through. The mountain view is beautiful. AT&T and Verizon both worked here. Most sites are level, although we had to use a couple of boards on our site, which is the reason for the "9" rather than a "10". Our site may actually have been the only unlevel site, so this isn't a huge problem. Nice people, nice location. I would definitely stay here again. We camped here in a Motorhome.

This is a primitive forest park 6 miles West of Custer (half-way between Custer and Jewel Cave). There's no hook-ups and only pit-toilets, but it's peacefully located in thick forest. Sites are dirt, mostly level with bench and fire-pit. Many will accommodate big-rigs, but some are a tight tad or too small. The roads are also fairly narrow with a lot of trees so it all depends how comfortable you are negotiating turns. We have a 40-footer and did fine, but we did squeeze a bit to get into our site. Someone else came in a 45-footer and did manage to get in after 40 min's of effort. So, it's possible to get big-rigs in here. The surrounding forest is thick and has wild raspberries in summer. It's pet-friendly and you can walk the dog in the forest, but there's no trails. Sites are reservable online. There are water spigots around the campground, but no dump-station (nearest dump is Sinclair gas station in Custer where you can dump for $4). We camped here in a Motorhome.

When we called one of the owners of this park, he gave me a rate of $38.29 per night. We were charged $ 47.39 for a 50 amp site with full hook up service, plus $ 3.00 per night per child for our two grandchildren, for a total of $ 53.39 per night. This charge was not quoted to us on the phone. It was also promoted that the Custer / Mt. Rushmore KOA had a pool, a jumping pillow, and a Chuck Wagon breakfast everyday. It was never stated that the jumping pillow was an extra $ 3.00 per child, per day, and the breakfast was also extra. When confronted about the price discrepancy, the female partner of this KOA stated that her male counterpart does not know what he is talking about. He only answered the phone because she was busy. I checked the rates at a couple of other RV parks in Custer and was quoted between $ 32.00, and $38.00 for all 4 of us to stay per night. One of the comparable parks also had a pool and a water slide (water slide is an additional charge), and the other park had no pool. The RV sites here were very close together, and were not maintained very well. I think you can have a better experience in Custer South Dakota by not staying at this KOA. We camped here in a Motorhome.

Great office staff and clean restrooms/showers. Laundry on site $2.00/wash, $1.75 for 44 minutes in dryer. Sites are VERY close, almost on top of each other (which is why we only rated it a 6). Just enough room for our RV on site, picnic table sits over next site's water & sewer hookup. Next site fire ring was at rear corner of our RV. Requires some leveling. No cable, no antennae reception. Wi-Fi worked very well. Some road noise. Close proximity to Mt. Rushmore (20 min drive), Custer State Park (a must do), Jewel Cave and Wind Cave. Great little town with plenty of eateries and tourist attractions. Baker's Bakery Cafe makes GREAT breakfast and donuts! Would consider another campground on our next trip here. We camped here in a Motorhome.

Very disappointed in this campground. The sites were close together. The place needs new gravel on the road and sites. It was very dusty and dirty. There was evidence that someone rinsed out their sewer house behind our site. The people next to us threw a bunch of their trash into the field behind the sites. It seemed like the kind of place where that kind of behavior was acceptable. We won't be back. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.

Very accommodating, friendly and helpful. Wonderful setting on the back side. They did what they could to get 3 of us together and in wonderful sites. Perfect setting for children to climb around rocks and play. Heavy rains yesterday caused erosion, people were out all day today working to clean up. Pool, clean laundry and rec room for diversions and fun. We camped here in a Motorhome.

I have read all the reviews about this park before coming. However we decided to stay anyway. This park is close to all the attractions in the Black Hills. I feel that all the other reviews weren't very fair. So I would like to clear somethings up for anybody else that is looking to come to the Black Hills next summer, that are looking for a great park to stay in. This park does sit on a hill side and there are a lot of pine trees which provide very good shade in the summer sun. I took many walks throughout the park trying to find low hanging branches which I could not find. Yes some of the sites are unlevel but all it takes if for guests to level there camper out a little effort goes along way, stop being lazy. All the bathrooms and showers were cleaned daily and they were spotless. The cabins that I saw were cozy and spotless. The roads are narrow but had no problem driving on them, if you can't drive on this roads you shouldn't be driving period. The on thing that sticks out about this park are the workers which I got to know some. This guys worked extremely hard all day long improving the park daily. They were very friendly and very helpful to us. We had vehicle problems which they fixed with no problem at all. I will stay here again in the future We camped here in a Motorhome.

This was a quiet campground and was tucked on a hill. It was not full when we stayed. The playground was very old and so was the pool. The pool needed a good scrubbing and was full of dead bugs. The cabin was very dusty. The woman in the office was very accommodating during our stay. We had to do a late check out due to car trouble and she worked with us. My boys loved the big rocks in the playground and spent many hours playing on them. We camped here in a Campground Cabin.

This is a gem of a State Park,. It has a dump station, but no water, sewer, Internet or cell. We stayed in the Game Lodge campground. Very well maintained with helpful and friendly staff. Road and pad are paved. The pads are level and wide, all back ins, and big rig friendly. Very quiet with space and privacy around the RV with lots of grass, shade trees, picnic table, and fire ring. The bathrooms are spotlessly clean and there is also a small laundry. There are so many things to see and do in this wonderful area. We would stay here again. We camped here in a Motorhome.

This is the best public park I have ever stayed in. It has electricity, a dump and access to water for your holding tank. There is unlimited stuff to do in the park. Game watching is wonderful--buffalo, deer, elk, donkeys. Mt Rushmore, the Badlands and Deadwood are easy day trips. The little town of Custer is delightful. Don't miss this place. This state park was a big surprise for me. It was huge, and had numerous campgrounds within it. The scenery was beautiful, and the camp hosts very friendly and helpful. When driving from camp to Mt. I normally would not give a 10 to a park without water and sewer hookups but this state park is amazing!! It has as many facilities and programs as a national park. We had site 19 which was at the peak of the hill so we had decent Verizon cell phone service. However, due to the trees we were not able to get satellite. The site was level and spacious. There is plenty of room between each site. Keep in mind that you don't "check-in" at a specific location but just go to the site indicated on your reservation. As with the other posts, there is a reservation fee and a $15 entrance fee for our tow car. All the roads are paved and in good shape. Each staff member we had the pleasure of meeting was very helpful and courteous. Be sure to go on the ranger led wild life caravan program. He took us down a road that put us right in the middle of a herd of bison. What an awesome event!! This is a great location for all the fantastic places in the area (i.e. Mr Rushmore, Wind Cave NP, Jewel Cave NM, Devil's Tower, Deadwood, Spearfish Canyon Scenic Drive, all the scenic loop drives in the park, etc). Be sure to attend the nightly illumination program at Mt. Rushmore. It is unforgettable. We would definitely camp here again if we were in the area. We camped here in a Motorhome.

This campground was recently changed to a reservable sites. Lots of open space between sites. There are no signs in the campground indicating where the sites are. So we drove in and had to walk around to find our site. Then we had to turn the rig around to head in the correct direction. We were in site 5E. With a 35' 5th wheel, maneuvering was tight. The sights at the bottom by the restroom are more open for big rigs. The water spigot nearby didn't work so water had to be accessed from restroom area. Very family friendly campground. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.

We made on line reservations around February 2011. We chose site 12E from the picture they have on the web site. However, when we arrived we felt the picture was somewhat deceiving. The camp sites were very close together and the campsite we chose was very small. It would have been difficult to back our 24' travel trailer into this small site. The campsite looked much bigger in the picture. We cancelled our reservations and found a wonderful RV Park in the town of Custer. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.

Site 8E was fully shaded and more than adequate for our 35' fifth wheel. Buffalo, deer and mountain sheep roamed through campground. Bike path and 2 fishing ponds very close. Convenient to activities in park plus Mt. Rushmore, Custer, caves, scenic drives, etc. 1 mile to general store. Small and quiet. Tent sites are across road in heavily wooded area. You do drive down a gravel county road for about 1/4 mile to get to the entrance of the campground and since there has not been any rain the road was very dusty. Although the park has Wi-Fi, it did not work well at our site and our AT&T phone service did not work either. I could get both of these services if I took a walk closer to the office. We were in site 18, it was a huge grassy site with firepit and picnic table. (Fire restrictions in effect during drought.) This campground is in a great location, just a half mile to the entrance to Custer State Park, which is just amazing. Mt Rushmore was about 25 miles away. The little town of Custer (population 1800), is a great little town, good restaurants, unique shops and you can get most of the supplies you would need. We would definitely come back here again. We camped here in a Motorhome.

We really liked this park. Very convenient to many of the area attractions. We saw deer and turkey wander through the park. It was very quiet and we could see the entrance to Custer State Park from our site. We stayed in a "premium pull through." These sites were actually smaller than some of the other sites. Our site was on both the entrance and exit roads. Very dusty due to the drought in the area. The water pressure was low but tolerable. We will return but will choose another area of the park to stay in. The rate is for a one week stay. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.

We really enjoyed this campground. It is a small campground tucked in across the road from Legion Lake in a small valley. It only has one road with a turnaround at the end. We talked to the campground hosts when we arrived to see if we could check in early and found them to be very nice and flexible. Over the course of our 2 day visit we saw them every day walking the campground. While there was no water hookup or dump station here (I believe Game Lodge campground had the only dump station), the restrooms made up for this. Probably the nicest restrooms at any public park I've been to. Large, well lit, clean, multiple, private, shower stalls were available. We had a buffalo hang out grazing in the campground one day that got a lot of attention. Legion Lake is very pretty, there is a store and restaurant next to it along with a swim beach and trail that goes around it. We camped here in a Tent Trailer.

Sites are asphalt and level. The campsite area and Legion Lake area was easy to navigate even with a 40' motorhome and toad. Camp host was great and very helpful. This is the finest state park I've been in ever. (40 states) I can't wait to come back. We camped here in a Motorhome.

South Dakota has stepped up to the plate in updating there State Parks in the Custer area (watch out Oregon). Very nice and clean with all hook ups except sewer for a reasonable price. We had Buffalo munching on grass within four feet of our door(very entertaining). We stayed here five days and had a great time. We camped here in a Motorhome.

Hi all, The website is fairly misleading as to the conditions at the campground. Few sites are level. There are two sites with 50 amp power and some sites do have sewer. Verizon cell phones may have 1 bar (or less) here, but data modems do work. The website offers a discount of $5.00 if you print the page and give it to the owner. The rate above reflects that reduction in price. The campground is near the Crazy Horse monument which is why it was selected. I came in a good time, picked out a site. I tracked down the owner, paid for the site and asked them to please put a reserved sign up. Imagine my dismay when I returned after the light show at Crazy Horse at ten o'clock at night to find the space filled by another RV. I pulled into another site--but it sure didn't leave me feeling "warm and cosy" towards the management. I would not stay here again. We camped here in a Motorhome.

This is a nice, fairly well kept park. The playground is totally outdated, but my kids didn't mind. Pool is nice, but small. Wi-fi was NOT good and we were close to the office and have a booster antennae. Had to use our Verizon card the entire week, as the campground was poor and unreliable. Great location. Convenient to town. Staff was nice. Putt-putt is free (had to buy $1 ball to use all week while we are here. The theme park is totally cheesy, but it was worth the $10 for me and my 3 kiddos to get in (all under 5)...don't plan on spending more then a couple of hours there, but it did bring back some childhood memories. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.

The only reason to stay at this park is probably the theme park, and the theme park is not a huge reason to come to Custer unfortunately. The sites are a long way away from the theme park. We walked, but it is a hike (esp with small children). The theme park is very well maintained. There is a small train that goes photo ops. There is a Flintstones car on a VW chassis. Kind of cool. Everything is clean there and freshly painted. Free movie theater to go and watch Flinstones cartoons. Basically you can see everything in 30-45min and there this is a playground. That is it. Not much. The campground itself is not very well maintained. The mini golf is free except you have to pay for golf balls if you need them. It is rotting and falling apart, but OK for free. The sites are packed together. We got full hook up and that is the further-est away from the park, we didn't know that. There are dump stations, so I would recommend getting something closer to the entrance and dumping later, you are not going to stay at this place for that long anyway (or you shouldn't, you'll be bored out of your mind). We are glad we stopped for a day to check it out, won't go again though. Admission to the park is $10 for adults. Our children were 2 and under, so they were free. This park is perfect for kids under 6 maybe. I saw a poor 13 year old being dragged around, clearly bored out of his mind. We camped here in a Motorhome.

This is not a campground I would choose for myself but the kids ask to return here. There is mini golf, a pool, and playground as part of the park fee. We get an electric only site as the full hook ups are further from these things. You park on flat grassy areas in that section. The worst of the park really is the lack of trees and the road is visible and close. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.

We used this park as our base while visiting Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Wind Cave Nat'l Park, Jewel Cave Nat'l Park and Devil's Tower Nat'l Park. The latter three being further away, but a nice drive. A nice treed park, very nice clean private bathrooms/showers and nice laundry. The site we were on did not have cable and the WiFi could only be accessed close to the office as one of their antennas were inoperable. It was quiet and clean. We would stay here again. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.

We camped here to see Custer State Park which is just a few miles from the campground and Mt Rushmore about 20 minutes away. We fell in love with the campground and Custer. The area was fantastic. Bathrooms were spotless. You have a private room with toilet, sink, and shower. Campground is nestled in tall pine trees. We definitely would return. In fact we liked it so much we will be workamping there next summer. By the way they have two Tipis, a covered wagon you can rent, and a tent area with covers over a deck that are next to again sparkling clean restrooms. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.

Rate reflects weekly off-season rate. We planned for a week here and stayed three. The location right in town is perfect for easy access to grocery store, bank, etc. Custer is a good location from which to explore the Black Hills. Sites are tight in this park, but ours (#12) was perfectly level and long enough to park the car behind the motor home. There are a number of long-term residents here, but their sites are neat. There is grass between each site, but there are not many trees. All utilities worked well, as did cable and wi-fi. The on-site manager works hard to make visitors feel welcome. We will most definitely choose this park when in the area again. We camped here in a Motorhome.

This is not the most picturesque campground, but the hosts more than make up for it. Spaces are kind of close together and the driveway is narrow, but the sites can accommodate big rigs. Full hookups are available, as well as free Wi-Fi (close to the office) and free cable TV. The Friday night potlucks are a blast. They even purchased a birthday cake for our 1 year old son. Rate cited is with PA. We would stay here again in a heartbeat. We camped here in a Travel Trailer.

Price is right with PA discount! Sites are small, all hookups are in good working order. Restrooms/showers were very clean. Great cable connection for $2 extra per night. The manager is THE reason to stay here versus other parks. Make sure you pull in with thick skin and immediately ready for banter. If you're OK with being forced out of your rig (not by gunpoint, for us at least) in the evening to socialize and eat/drink with the most WIDELY diverse group of guests, then you need to stay here! Seriously though, this manager gives the CG a Sturgis-like atmosphere while ensuring the park is quiet, calm and safe for a good night's sleep. We regret having to leave after one night and would return in a heartbeat. We camped here in a Motorhome.

Park was friendly but Verizon phone and air card didn't work well. The showers sprayed water everywhere, so it was difficult to keep clothes, and shoes dry. Voltage dipped to unsatisfactory level when any appliance turned on. It is convenient to tourist attractions. I would not return. We camped here in a Motorhome.

Near Crazy Horse Monument and an hours drive to Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park. Sites are grass, level, wide, deep and mostly pull throughs. There are some shade trees but when we visited they were young and small. Good laundry facilities and great area for dogs just outside the camp grounds. We camped here in a camper.

Small RV park with rustic cabins on site, away from the RV sites. Very friendly and helpful staff. We stayed here for two weeks and had the time of our lives. The owners are really friendly and the park is nice enough. There is a restaurant on the premises that has out-of-this-world breakfasts, the 7th Cavalry Cafe. There are no trees in the park itself, which is fine for us as we use a satellite dish. The sites are grassy and all have picnic tables. This park is a mile from Custer State Park and close to quite a few other tourist sites, so it worked perfectly for us. We loved this area and will be back, and we will stay at this park again. We camped here in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a small, friendly family owned park. The interior roads and pads are gravel. There are twenty sites, half with full hookups and the remainder electric and water. In addition, there are approximately fifteen tent sites. All sites are open. Our site took considerable effort to level and was difficult to exit. It has Wi-Fi. We were able to get one antenna television station. The bathrooms were okay. It was very quiet at night. Wheels West RV Park is a very basic park. We camped here in a Motorhome.
