Love this spot, stayed an extra day. Mesquite is by far the best campground in the place. More room, more views. The colors and canyons are stunning. Avoid weekends if possible due to the crowds and day users who clamor everywhere. You can get 3G in the campground with AT&T but not Verizon. That's available at entrance gatehouse 7 miles away. Lots of cool hikes, especially to the Lighthouse! Not all that difficult except for last 100 yards uphill but so worth it.
Hate to be contrary but I wouldn't give this CG a 9 or 10 as some have. Don't misunderstand: it's pretty darn nice and the area is gorgeous. But, to me, a 9-star needs to be close to idyllic. The biggest negative about Wood River CG, was the almost constant road noise. Because the sites are all very close to the highway, there is A LOT of car, truck and motorcycle rumble which subsides late at night, but never stops completely. That said, the spots are wide, the trees tall and dense, the firewood plentiful and the river roaring. But few spots are on the river itself, most are a ways from it. There is only one pull-through site and it's reserved for double camping (two parties.) There are several other USGS campgrounds in the general vicinity ( 25 miles) and next time we'll check out some that are a little further off the highway. It can make quite a difference.
We read the other glowing reports so decided to stay here. It's nice, but not 'wonderful.' The eight spots are at the edge of a large gravel parking lot and do back up to the Salmon River, which is really cool to sit and look down on about 20' below. There are a few large trees, not many, and there is grass along the back, behind the RV sites, which is an ideal spot to set up chairs or use one of the few picnic tables available. Our site didn't have one and when we moved one as directed by the (sweet) lady who owns the place, a guy came out of his motorhome and was quite perturbed, so we put it back and did without. The Wi-Fi is on and off as in many places. It's late July and there were enough mosquitos to make sitting out a risky proposition. We got several bites but it has been a super wet spring here. All sites sit fairly close to Hwy 93 too so there is road noise. All in all, a nice place to spend the night, especially with the river flowing directly below/behind you. But not a 10-Star rating in my book.
As others have said, this is not a place you travel to in order to spend time here. It's what we call a stop spot. Convenient location, full hook-ups, well run. Because we've found all parks look the same inside our trailer at night. But we enjoyed "Pop' and his amazing collection of metal toys & model trains, He also gave us a little packet with maps, local points of interest and shopping spots. So what if parts weren't legible, it's the thought that counts. Oh, and how's this for service: because it was going to freeze overnight he came around at 10PM and disconnected everyone's water line. Farmington is a surprisingly big place w/great restaurants and stores.Try Taverna-A Greek Grill with great food and wait staff who breaks out into dance and flame-spewing!
This was a nice place with super wide sites and quiet nights. It isn't the northwest, it's the southwest, so the terrain is dry, the trees short and the lake small. But the campground has nice shelters (adobe at the reserved sites, tin roof at the first come-first-served sites) with benches and water hook-ups (must share with neighbor at some sites) and electricity. No sewer, but nice dump station on exit road. We walked to the lake, watched the sun set, and resisted feeding the too-tame deer. At night, something marauded our trash can; probably raccoons. Would definitely stay here again; great deal for the money compared to private campgrounds. It's far out, away from everything, but we like that.
We wanted to be close enough to Santa Fe for easy visits to museums, etc., but far enough out to have peace and quiet. This place fit the bill perfectly. Nice and peaceful, well maintained and the first wi-fi we've had in two weeks that worked fast and without any hiccups at all. Evening afforded nice views of the city below, stars above. It has a nice, clean laundry facility. We would stay here next time in SF for sure.
