We chose this location as a good jump off point to Mammoth cave, for that purpose it worked out well. This campground is pretty remote for supplies and at least 20 min from the nearest shopping area. That said, it's also a good 30 min from Mammoth cave. Our registration was fast and simple through reserve America. We were given a garbage bag and map at the park entrance and we were off to the campsite. The campsite was well kept and the area appeared to be in good repair. Our biggest problem was the cleanliness of the bath house. There were dead bugs all over, and I mean all over everything, to include the sink counter, the urinal, the toilet and the showers. As for the live bugs they weren't that much of a problem but they need to install a fan to move the air and keep bugs from settling in. The view we had from our campsite was incredible, overlook of the lake breathtaking especially the next morning when the sun came up. We would camp there again when in the area.
This park has a few great things going for it, the relatively private beach access, the fishing pier, the clean bathrooms/facilities and it's proximity to stores and restaurants. On the downside the campsite we stayed at (#116) was very difficult to level our trailer on, and was listed as crushed concrete. There was no crushed concrete on this site. There are some campsites that are concrete pads and some are crushed concrete but not this one. Another thing I didn't like was that there was one of 3 gates to allow foot traffic through to the beach that was going right through this campsite. Because of this I felt a bit uneasy as we had a bunch of people eyeballing our belongings, my family and our campsite. I think this was poor planning of the campground layout. As a security issue this gate was locked at night and only one gate was usable after that for which you needed to know the security code to go through. In my opinion, they should only have one entrance with a concrete sidewalk that does not go through anyone's campsite. Also, the cost per night was more expensive than I thought it should be, especially for those from out of state. Several fellow campers complained about the cost to stay here. Many of the fellow campers I talked with complained that they felt as though they were being gauged for being from out of state. On a few occasions I found the bathroom facilities were abused by campers but the staff corrected any problems reasonably fast so the facilities were always usable the next day. The campground needs to make an effort to improve their power and water source poles as just the act of hooking up your power or water felt as though these hook ups were going to break and fall apart As a matter of fact, when my neighbor unhooked his water hose to leave, he broke the pvc pipe and flooded my campground. I had to find the water valve in the ground to prevent a further mess. Overall this campground is ok, but could be so much better if they would invest more money and thought into maintenance and layout. The picnic area, the store and playground were great and on several occasions we did see security drive by making their rounds. We might return if we are in the area, but I think we will look elsewhere first.
This park was a wonderful park to stay, it is part of a wildlife preserve so there are a variety of animals to be seen here, which helps feel like you are in a very special place. Our children loved this park because of the wildlife and park activities. There are two lakes on this park with multiple places to fish, boat, swim, play volleyball, go to playgrounds, have picnics and just about anything else you could want to do. My only warning is to make sure you lock up your garbage overnight because the raccoons will knock over the garbage cans or take food right off your table, so be ready for these animal thugs. Animal interactions also included wild turkey, deer and a huge variety of birds. The park attendants were pleasant and helpful, the nightly price was great, the facilities were great (but sometimes the campers who used them were slobs) and the security/safety of the park was nice. We arrived here on a weekday so we had the campground to ourselves until the weekend when it started to fill up and get busy. We will return over and over again as soon as we can.
This park is beautiful and remote. It takes a long time to get to this park partly because it's on the far end of an island and the speed limit is very slow. All in all though, that's great because the benefit of this pristine, primitive campground by far outweighs the lack of tourist food and entertainment. The nightly price when we stayed here, was very reasonable and the facilities were very clean. We stayed at campsite 60 and were lucky to reserve that spot because everything else had been booked up. We used the online service (Reserve America website) to reserve our spot. The only downside was that there was only one bathroom/shower available for use, the other one was under repair. The staff was friendly and helpful. We are looking forward to returning to this park when the weather cooperates a little better. We were here at the beginning of March and it was unusually cold, so mosquitos were not an issue but the thunderstorms were. Great park!
Staff was friendly and helpful. We prefer to use campsite bathroom facilities, and theirs was dirty at all times with a layer of hair, grime, and soap scum on the walls the whole time we were there. The facilities did not appear maintained any of the time we were there as the condition of the trash, showers and sinks never improved. I had to unclog the drain in the bathroom myself. In the women's bathroom, the shower stopped working all of the sudden, and instead of fixing the problem, they instructed my wife to use the men's bathroom (not a problem but we have 2 little girls as well). The washer and dryers worked most of the time, but occasionally the machines just didn't work. The pool was closed because staff said the liner needed to be repaired which was to be repaired the next day. The next day my wife asked if pool lining was repaired; they then told her that the pump needed to be replaced. Finally we were able to go swimming 3 days after we arrived but there was still a hole in the lining and the pump was the same old one that was there all along. Staff was understanding about our need to suddenly leave as our visit was cut short due to family emergency. Camp sites were very nice and if we didn't need to use facilities or pool I think we would have been very pleased overall. Facilities and pool needed some attention. I believe part of the problem with this RV park is that since it is shared with a mobile home park they forget about the RVs. Also, it was somewhat strange to have a campsite that was shared with mobile home park. Office and signage appear old and worn. Wi-Fi was not free according to staff, but had no difficulty getting online briefly by using someone else's unsecured access. We would not stay here again unless in motorhome. For us the campsite's strength was it's location that suited our needs perfectly.
It has great, safe and well maintained campsites. The bathrooms and showers were clean and plentiful, located throughout park. The surrounding Forrest is in a state of decay thanks to recent hurricane damage. There are flat roads for cycling with easy access by bike to surrounding businesses and beach. There are level and easy to back into asphalt camping pads at the campsite. When the sun goes down don't get caught outside unless covered in mosquito repellent. We didn't see many shaded campsites, everything appeared exposed to the Florida sun. There are shopping, stores and restaurants located within a 10 minute drive. The washroom was in need of updating and wi-fi is only accessible when near the recreation room. We're looking forward to the next trip to beach.
Wow, after a long drive on Hwy 280, we were glad to find this gem. Our campsite was right on the water with a 25ft dock. We loved the fact that we could go swimming from the campsite, not only restricted to the beach areas. The camp area was well maintained, ease of hook up was nice and overall feeling of safety was good as there are multiple gates throughout the park. Nearby bathroom facilities were clean and well maintained. Everything was easily accessible by bicycle. My only complaint is that the camp store is expensive (it's staff was not friendly) and the maps are horrible due to over copying. If you like to use the provided BBQ grills and tables pay attention because not all campsites have them. There were many campsites available and the camp office was helpful in deciding where to make camp. We had no problem letting our children play freely in the park because of the overall family vibe of the park. We are looking forward to the next time we stay there.
