Well spaced sites in a beautiful setting beneath the mountains and far enough from the interstate to make the road noise only a dim hum. We hiked up to the peak from both the front side one day and the back side another day: a great hike. Electric only, but not a problem for shorter stays. Fire rings, picnic table and a shade ramada at each site. Good place for traditional, family RV camping.
Most sites are well spaced. The hiking and mountain biking in the park are both very good. Restrooms are newer and very clean. Private showers where you can actually adjust the temperature. We hiked the Pass Mountain Loop, Windcave Trail, and Merkle Nature Trail: all great. I did an 11-mile bike ride on fun trails. We had fires every night. I highly recommend this park for a family. Well worth the $25 per night. No reservations and it's very popular in prime season, so plan on getting stuck in the overflow camping for one night during high season.
Warning. This park is wonderful and we would love to see it stay open through all the budget cuts. We had one issue, otherwise this would have received a 10. We made a reservation after looking at the “Not to Scale Map”. When we arrived we realized we made a mistake, the space we thought we were getting was not the one reserved (we had been to this park before and were going from memory and the map fooled us). The map showed the space we wanted the size of a tent site, when actually it is one of the largest spaces in the park. There were four other RVs in the park (the park was empty, it was a Tuesday at the end of summer, kids back in school) and we were told we could not change spots without paying a penalty of a full night fee and a reservation fee ($55 for one night including penalty). In summary, they punish you for making a mistake and for making a reservation. If you make a reservation in this park you pay a fee of $5, pay a higher rate per night, you get an inferior space and you cannot change spaces when you arrive even when the park is empty! Our fifth wheel and truck would not fit in our reserved space without unhitching. The park rangers we talked with were all really nice, however, only one can make decisions on park rules and he was not around (he was not available the three days we were there). He does not allow his rangers to make any decisions without his approval. We were also told we are not the first customers to leave upset and we surely will not be the last unless these rules are changed. The reason for writing this email is the hope that other people will talk to him and ask him to make the rules friendly for the customers. Do not punish people for making a reservation, let them enjoy their trip in a space that fits their unit (maps which are not to scale cannot be read well over the internet and everyone has different preferences). We were not able to talk with the manager, left a message, but never received a return call. We want our AZ State Parks to stay in business and treat customers right. Thank you for reading this posting, I hope it will make a difference.
Two hook-up loops are Hacienda and Cottonwood. We stayed 2 nights in Hacienda then moved to Cottonwood for 5 nights. Both loops are nice, Hacienda is older but has more mature trees for shade. Cottonwood seemed to have a bit more room between sites and also had some 50 amp sites. All sites in Cottonwood have a shade structure with picnic table underneath. Hacienda has picnic tables but no shade structures. We had what we thought was the best site in Cottonwood (space #14) -- right on the lake with 50 amp power. Other sites in both Cottonwood and Hacienda also have great exposure to the lake, but we preferred space 14. Every day we swam in the lake (about 64 degrees), used the hot mineral spring (about 98 degrees) and rode bikes around the park. Nothing but electric motors allowed on the lake so the setting is very peaceful with mountain views all around. A great family park for traditional camping with fire rings and lots of outdoor time.
Excellent for an active family. We stayed in B loop in a great site for one week. Plenty of space between RVs. Asphalt site with grass/dirt surrounding the sites. Great hiking trails nearby. Good mountain biking also. Shower/bath facility in B loop is clean, new and well maintained. Beautiful views from all sites of Santa Catalina Mountains. Shorts and t-shirt during the sunny days but quite cold once the sun went down. Our water line froze on two nights. Wal-Mart and Olive Garden just outside the park boundary, but you won't feel the city once you are in the park, just the mountains and the Sonaran desert.
Very nice park south of Tucson. Close to all services in Green Valley and close to nice dining in Tubac. Good golf also nearby. Great park for families with excellent recreational options including indoor, heated pool, air hockey, etc. Huge clubhouse. We enjoyed our week long stay and would return again.
Great place. Lots of grass and space between RVs. Great swimming area with sand beach. Plenty for kids to do. A wonderful experience. Will definitely return.
Nice folks were on-site managing, but this was not our idea of a nice RV camping experience. Too many RVs crammed into too little space. No grass and lots of asphalt and chain link fence. Don't like to be negative, but would not stay here again unless circumstances forced us to.
Nice park. Owners were very helpful when we had trouble with the landing gear on our fifth wheel. Great kid's playground and clean restrooms and showers. The pool was also very refreshing and well maintained. Would stay here again.
Great park. Wonderful owners that take much pride in running an excellent park. 100 yards from a nice lake. Two paddle-driven boats for family fun. Once in the middle of the lake (away from plant growth on fringes) the swimming is great. So much for children to do -- air hockey, small golf area, playground, etc. A great family park in a nice setting amongst corn fields and a great value using the Passport pass.
We loved this park. We stayed in one of the spaces that overlooked Sugar Creek. We were in the shade of trees all day. We rented tubes for the kids then swam and floated in the creek. The park has acres of open, grassy space which is a scarce item in too many RV parks. The owners were wonderful folks. Highly recommended and a great value using the Passport pass.
