We last camped here 30 years ago. We were really pleased with the improvements that have been made, in particular, the RV hookups. We were here with a large group of tent campers, so after spending the day at the lake with them, in 100+ degree temps, it was really nice to be able to go back our trailer's AC. For boaters: fuel dock at the marina may be closed during the week. The closest gas station or market for that matter, is about a 16 mile round trip.
Friendly staff, nice well stocked on site store. Sites are easy to get into, with a little bit of grass, a picnic table and fire ring. Our stay was over a holiday weekend so the place was packed, lots and lots of kids. They even had a rock band playing on Saturday and Sunday nights. They rent bikes on site so there were plenty of people riding bikes and scooters through the campground. They allow tents, so we saw several several sites with RV's plus 1 or 2 tents, for extra family and friends. There is a great bike path just outside the property. It's a quick ride to the pier or into old town Ventura. As mentioned in other reviews, the park is directly next to the 101 fwy. We like to stay in the in the back row 70's sites. The RV's in the closer rows seem to block the freeway noise.
Nice State campground right on the water. Sites are back-in or pull-in, some of the pads have deteriorated due to closeness to the ocean, making leveling a bit of a challenge. Nearby to shopping, a nice bike path and downtown Ventura. The downsides, like many beach side campgrounds in CA, its close to the 101 freeway and train tracks. Also a friendly ranger warned me to bring my generator in at night. Very busy on weekends especially during the summer. I'd advise making reservations on Reserve America.
